2000
host house
May 13, 2000 DWF event – home
of Mr. And Mrs. Charles Smith
301 Williams Avenue
Coons-Smith House
The lot on which this home is situated, was purchased by Dr. William
Weeden as part of the grounds of the Weeden House in 1845. The lot
was subsequently sold to Dr. Harry J. Coons in 1939, at which time
he employed George H. Walters to design and build the Jeffersonian
style home that is presently located in historic Twickenham. The
home was the first in Huntsville to have recessed indirect lighting,
which still exists in the living room.
Mr. And Mrs. Wilton H. Pollard purchased the home from Dr. Coons
in 1944 and resided there until the late 1960’s. In 1980, Mr.
Morris Frank purchased the home and resided there until he sold the
home to local attorney Charles R. Smith, Jr. in 1987.
In 1995, Charles and his wife Linda employed architect Bill Peters
and contractor Chris Chandler to execute the extensive restoration
and renovation of the home. Bill Nance, notable landscape designer,
worked closely with Mrs. Smith in designing the romantic and sophisticated
gardens. The rose bower in the east corner of the back garden was
imported from England and reconstructed in 1998.
Today, the Coons-Smith House and its gardens stand as a lovely tribute
to its owners, both past and present, while maintaining its historic
integrity.
The AIDS Action Coalition gratefully acknowledges Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Smith for their support of the 2000 DWF event.
